We got a rave review on this booklet from Art Jewelry Magazine!

This patina and many other ways of coloring base metals are covered in this excellent resource.

All book, video and publication sales are final (unless there is a manufacturing problem).

Mini Torch

Our miniature blow torch is great for coloring and soldering metal and even for getting a fine crackle on your crème bruleé! It's easy to use. You'll need to buy the butane locally. It's available at most hardware and home stores.

Materials: mask armature, 26 gauge copper (torch-fired for color), copper wire, copper mesh, eyelet, acrylic paint

Metal Bending and Forming
Dapping/Doming Block and Punches
Eight dapping tools with matching block in a neat wooden block. Cavity sizes are 28, 24, 20, 18, 15, 12, 9 and 6mm with corresponding punches. Opposite side of polished steel block is smooth for use as a bench block.

Considering everything you can do with the punches and the block, this is really several tools in one. The punches are great for flaring tube rivets.

$50.00 Set

A dapping (AKA "doming") block
is used for doming metal

Wire and Lead Bender
Use this handy wire bender for bending wire that's a little too tough to bend by hand. You can either screw or clamp it to a bench or table. It's great for bending lead came (stained glass) or copper grounding wire (metalsmithing).

If you work on rings with stones you might want the grooved mandrel, otherwise the ungrooved will meet your most of your needs.

Steel Ring Mandrel
Use this mandrel whenever you need to round or curve a piece of metal. Perfect for making finger and toe rings. Made of solid steel, it has ring size markings 1 - 16. This is a high quality mandrel made in the U.S. Choose grooved or ungrooved profile.

Sterling Silver Ring by Christine Cox

Better Bench Block, Anvil and Pounding Mat

Better Bench Block (2 sizes)

Our Better Bench Block is the original. It's a superior product as It's made from high carbon steel (it's harder to damage) and it's milled incredibly smooth (fewer marks to transfer to your work). Made in U.S.A.

Our hand-made bench blocks are clearly superior.  Our bench block is a milled plate of very hard steel alloy mounted onto a high quality 3/4" hardwood base. Most blocks are just a slab of steel, some polished and hardened, some not. Ours transfer less vibration therefore there's less stress on you. They are also significantly lighter than solid blocks so they are perfect for traveling. They come in 2 sizes to suit your metalsmithing or eyeleting needs.

Hint to wire workers, if you are using annealed or dead-soft round wire, place it on one block and then press down as you roll another block on top. It will straighten and harden your wire nicely.

Small Bench Block
2 7/8" X 2 7/8" X 1"
$16.00

Large Bench Block
3 7/8" X 3 7/8" X 1"
$23.50

Pounding Mat
We found another great multi-purpose tool (our favorite kind). It's about a 5" square Pounding Mat made from really dense rubber. Not only does it protect your work table from scratches caused by bench blocks, it also protects it from inadvertent cuts. Any being weaker than Superman couldn't accidentally cut through this stuff. Your table is safe! The best thing is that it's sound absorbing (are your ears ringing from hammering metal?). We use these in the Studio and appreciate the difference in the sound level.

$7.25

Note: We cut the pounding mats by hand. As the rubber is very dense it's nearly impossible to cut it in a straight line. The mats aren't pretty but they are very useful! Colors vary.

Mini Anvil
OK, my first thought when I saw these was, "Cute!" Actually these miniature "horn" (because of the shape) anvils are quite handy for those small jewelry jobs when a larger block is just overkill. If you tend to make ring- or earring-sized things, or if you want a small anvil for traveling, you'll love this little hard worker.
4-1/8"L X 1-9/16"H X 1"W (size may vary slightly)

$12.75

Alpha/Numeric Metal Punch Set
These punches are ideal for metal or, tapped more gently, leather. They even work on tooling foil. Ideal for debossing your name, the date, the title of your book, whatever, into the front of a metal journal. They are easy to use with your hammer. Sets come with a full alphabet, "&" and numbers 0-8 (turn 6 upside down for 9)

1/16" $20.00
High Quality Steel

1/8" $10.00

1/4" $17.00

We also sell Alphabet and Number Punch Sets which are not suitable for metal work but are great for punching into leather, unfired PMC (Precious Metal Clay), polymer clay or wood.

The ideal surface for stamping is a Bench Block on top of a Pounding Mat. You need the Metal Bench Block to get well-defined, crisp letters. Use our Pounding Mat to protect your table and lower the noise level.

These punches are coated with oil to keep them from rusting. It is easily removed. Find out how and see other tips.

Note: These sets come in cheap plastic boxes which occasionally break in shipment. Sorry, we cannot guarantee the boxes. We do, however, pack them well and cross our fingers.

Miniature Hardware

Automatic Center Punch
This tool is essential for making a pilot dent when drilling in metal. It helps keep your drill bit from skidding all over and scratching up the metal. Use on a Bench Block. Colors vary.

I just spent some time visiting your wondrous website and just had to thank you for a breath-taking experience!  Heartfelt gratitude for your gifts to this world! Many thanks

How to use our miniature hardware and tools:
  • With the #55 Drill Bit, drill holes in both pieces you will be joining.
  • Use a Tap to cut threads into the inside each of the holes you drilled (easier than it sounds).
  • Align the holes in the pieces and then screw in the hardware.
  • Add the nuts (washers are optional and can go on the front or the back).
  • Tighten the nuts using either the appropriate Wrench or use flatnose pliers (and a tiny screwdriver if using screws necessary).
  • To shorten and finish the bolt off: Use Heavy Duty Wire Cutters to cut the bolt off pretty close to the nut (half the diameter of the bolt is a good rule of thumb).
  • Turn the piece over and rest the head of the bolt on a Bench Block.
  • Use a Chasing Hammer to peen the cut-end of the bolt until it's rounded and smooth and the nut can no longer back off. This last step can be avoided by simply using Loctite or some other appropriate glue (E6000 works). Personally, I'd avoid the liquid connection.
  • If it isn't important to thread the hardware into your piece, you can just drill the holes with a 1/16" drill bit (available from hardware stores) and pop the hardware in. The hole will be just a tiny bit too big, so it will look the same, but it will be a little looser and less secure.

Miniature Screws, Nuts and Washers
(Pkg. 20 ea. screws, nuts and washers)
We are so excited to offer these tiny, tiny screws, nuts and washers! Have you seen the wonderful jewelry and constructions that people are making with them? They are 1/16" diameter. Now you have an alternative to riveting and they look great! Stainless Steel or Brass.

Miniature Hex Head Bolts, Nuts and Washers
These tiny hex head bolts, washers and nuts are great for bolting pieces together but -- thinking out of the box -- wouldn't they make great eyes on a doll? They are 1/16" diameter. They look great! Stainless Steel or Brass.

Because it's solid copper, all your
great patina recipes work on
our mesh too.

This cool copper mesh frame was folded so that the thickness of the edges would act as a heat sink and therefore not melt. I then torched the center of the mesh. The beading around the inside of the frame was caused by the melting copper and gave a very nice finished appearance to the frame. The heat also gave the frame wonderful colors. Holding and Clamping
Plastic Basket
This basket is made entirely of plastic so it doesn't add copper to the pickle solution. It makes your pickle last longer and keeps your silver from becoming copper plated. Simply quench your metal in water (a very important step), put it into the basket and rest the basket in your pickle pot. It also saves you from having to dig tiny things out of your pickle with clunky tongs. It's a simple and elegant solution to a universal problem. It's also perfect for use in your ultrasonic cleaner or for sifting powdered media. We recommend separate baskets for each use to keep chemicals pure. 2-1/4" basket
(colors vary)

$2.50 each

Double Pin Vise
Have you ever wished for a better grip when hand-twisting a drill bit, burr or a Tap for Mini-Hardware? A pin vise is a really indispensable tool that is useful in so many small ways. Both ends are little chucks (you know, the thing that holds a bit in a drill) and it will really grip your bit or tool. Every jeweler's bench and work table should be equipped with one. Unlike most, this one closes down to 0 and has 4 different sizes of collets.

$3.00 ea.

Mini Bench Vise
This invaluable little tool is incredible! I keep mine clamped right on my bench and use it constantly. Use it for holding charms while you soft solder, to hold a nail-set while you rivet, to make the first head on a rivet, to hold a dowel for making chain more flexible, to hold wire as you twist it. It's one of those things that you wonder how you ever did without.

We have photos of our Mini Bench Vise at work

Wooden Hand Vise
Have you ever tried to file something too tiny to hold? How about wire? Enter the wonderful tool called a Hand Vise (AKA Ring Clamp). Patinating Solution
This patination solution is fantastic! Depending on how long you leave your metal in the solution you will get color anywhere from a light yellow/brown to a dark gunmetal gray. Solution works on brass, nickel silver, bronze and copper. It even turns sterling silver a nice even blue-gray. MUCH lower odor than Liver of Sulfur.

Patina is a noun, as in "The beautiful patina on a piece." Patinate is a verb, as in "You patinate your piece to give it a beautiful patina."

Soft Brass Brush
This hard-to-find tool is indispensable. I use mine to clean pickle and oxides off copper and silver and to equalize the color while oxidizing metals. It's perfect for depletion gilding (the heating and pickling process which precedes reticulation, keum-boo and some enameling). The beauty and utility of this brush come from the bristles -- which are soft brass -- so don't press hard or you'll work-harden them. These are nothing like those hard brass brushes you get at hardware stores. These are far gentler. Made in Germany.
